Atatiana Jefferson, who was killed at her home by a former Texas police officer, has been sentenced to almost 12 years in prison.

A 28-year-old Black woman named Jefferson was shot to death by Aaron Dean while police were responding to an open structure call in October of this year.

At the time Jefferson was fatally shot, her nephew Zion, who is now 11 years old, was with her. Zion was just eight years old when Jefferson was killed.

The jury sentenced Dean to 20 years of imprisonment instead of 20 years in prison for murder earlier this month, and he was convicted of manslaughter, not murder.

He was sentenced to 11 years, 10 months, and 12 days by a Tarrant County jury, according to Fox's Dallas-Fort Worth affiliate, KDFW.

In the aftermath of a gag order having been lifted, Ashley Carr, Jefferson's sister, responded to the sentencing.

"I wish there had been more time," Carr said outside Jefferson's home, according to a news report.
