Moby Dick is often referred to as America’s first great epic. The story that inspired this novel is the sinking of a whale ship, the Essex, in 1820 at the hands of a giant sperm whale. With widespread notoriety and the source of a beloved novel, this film adaptation of a Nathaniel Philbrick book by the same name has a lot to live up to. While most wouldn’t argue that Ron Howard is up to the task, early criticism indicates in the heart of the sea does little more than tread water.
