I just celebrated my nine-year anniversary and, just as in past years, it has caused me to reflect on marriage. Not just mine, but the concept in general. It seems to me that the very idea of marriage is about permanence. Specifically, it is about choosing permanence. In this life, there is precious little that can be thought of as lasting our entire lives, and even less that we have any choice about. We may decide on a career, but an unnerving amount of that is out of our hands, left up to those that would hire us. We may choose health – to eat right and exercise – but there’s no guarantee that illness or injury won’t occur. And, sadly, even parenthood isn’t immune from the possibility of tragedy.
