When we’re all very young and imagining what we want to be when we grow up, we think of policemen, firemen, astronauts… the list goes on. As we grow slightly older we move on to more impressive and realistic aspirations, like superheroes!!! Well, maybe that’s a little backwards, but never-the-less, every boy I know wishes to be a superhero, or have some special power at their disposal at some point in their boyhood. All of us here at Let There Be Movies still have a bit of those boyhood dreams lingering. With Iron Man 3 just released, Man of Steel and Thor 2 on the horizon, we thought it would be appropriate to think about what superhero we would all wish to be.
Elliott: Spider-Man
This is a difficult choice, but he has been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember. I love his attitude, he’s a joker, sarcastic, and a little cocky. The Amazing Spider-man, which came out last summer did a great job of portraying his character, especially the nerdy side. Despite my fear of falling, I’ve always thought it would be awesome to be able to swing from buildings and climb up walls. My spidey sense tells me I may be mocked for this choice… Oh wait, that’s just experience talking. Despite that, I always have been and will remain a fan of Spider-man.
Derek: Thor
Ever since I was a wee lad, I’ve always been drawn to Thor. I blame this on being a child of the 80’s and being brainwashed to believe that muscular guys with long hair are cool. I was also a big wrestling fan, and Thor is the one who would fit in the best there. He looks cool, and he has a cool hammer that will seriously ruin your day. And what’s more powerful than a god? Theologically I have an issue with saying anyone can be a god, but as a fictional character, he’s the first I would pick to be on my flag football team. It was pretty close between him, Batman, Hulk, and David Dunn from Unbreakable. But ultimately, I went with my 80’s hero because, let’s be honest, he would annihilate every other superhero in battle. Oh, and his name is the coolest.
Gene: Wolverine
The dude heals himself… forget Obama-care, I want Wolverine-care! Wolverine is rough around the edges, has a troubled past, is the rebel in a group of good little rule-followers, has a sweet do, and oh yeah, claws protruding from a metallic skeleton which nothing can break (I’m looking at you, Magneto). Everything about this guy’s persona screams bad guy. He loathes working with others and always has a scowl on his face. But despite a rough exterior, he chooses to fight for good. He is the working mans superhero, complete with arm hair that could top most guys beards.
John: Batman
Hands down, he’s my favorite superhero of them all. Despite what some may believe, he does have superpowers. His intellect alone makes him superior to the masses. He is one of the only characters who has the potential to exist in real life, making the notion that much more appealing to me.
Tres: Captain America
His greatest power is his heart. Born a normal guy with some major disadvantages his greatest desire was to serve his country and defend the innocent. Because of his pureness of heart and desire to serve, he was blessed with the body and skills that he wasn’t born with and enhanced beyond expectations. Even with all of that power, skill, and ability…. He’s stayed true to his original idealistic views of defending his country and those who can not defend themselves. One of my favorite stories goes back to where he helped Diamond Back escape the serpent society to become good. They fell in love and then Cross Bones kidnapped her and tortured her. It was a year-long comic story that showed the personal heart of Cap, his love for his lady, and the sacrifices that he suffered to save her.
Eric: Superman
***Late entry*** I’ve always liked Superman and I think it is because he is invincible with the exception of an exotic rock known as kryptonite. My favorite power of his is probably flight. I love this power because of the freedom. If you can fly you can get anywhere you want to be.
So, what do you think of our list? Shocked nobody picked Hulk? Or Iron Man? Who would you be if you could be any superhero?
